History

The Institute was set up in 25th Aug. ‘ 1987 under the administrative control of the Directorate of Employment and Craftsmen Training, Skill, Employment & Entrepreneurship Department, Government of Assam to be a ‘portal’ to train and empower young women in skills development and be self dependent.

ITI for Women started with two trades viz: Secretarial Practice and Hair & Skin Care (now re-named Basic Cosmetology) with intake capacity of 24 trainees for each Trade, Secretarial Practice started in the year 1988 and Hair & Skin Care (now re-named Basic Cosmetology) started in the year 1988. Subsequently two more Trades were introduced in Electronic Mechanic and Draughtsman (Civil) with intake capacity of 24 trainees per trade. Electronic Mechanic started in the year 1999 & Draughtsman (Civil) started in the year 1996. However, the intake capacity of trainees for each Trade today is 24. In the year 2013, Semester System has been implemented in the Institute as per an order from DGE&T, Government of India.

ITI for Women has since tied up with Lakme Lever Pvt. Ltd. and initiated a new chapter to its history by starting a Lakme Academy to facilitate novices to become professionals in the Beauty Industry. The duration of the course is of three months salon course with two modules viz.: Hair & Skin, Hands & Feet.

The Institute offers various short term MES courses that run the year round as well as courses offered by K.K.Handique Open University.
